Geek Obsession #5 – Skelanimals

Hey there guys! I come today with some more merchandise that I have been collecting for quite some time! This time we are talking about the most adorable plushies in the universe!! SKELANIMALS!!

Buenas, gente. Volvemos con más merchandise. Esta vez son unos peluches que llevo coleccionando desde hace ya algún tiempo, İy son la cosa más adorable del mundo mundial! İSKELANIMALS!

They became really popular in the early 2000s (at least in Spain…), and I immediately fell in love with the idea on skeletal like animal plushies that actually were not creepy but rather cute! I think one of the main appeals as well was the fact that their design was relatively simple and gender neutral. And Not covered in sparkling glitter, or mad bright colours. So whether you’re male or female, if you like plushies, they look nice. If you’re a goth with a soft side, they go too. And if you just like cuddly bears with a twist, then find yourself a Skelanimal.

Empezaron a ser bastante populares a principios de los 2000 (al menos en España). Me encantaron desde el primer momento que supe de su existencia, me gustó mucho la idea de peluches de animales en forma de esqueleto pero que no fuesen desagradable, sino más bien bastante monos. I otra cosa que siempre me ha gustado mucho es lo sencillo que es su diseño, y la neutralidad de género. Bueno y que no estaban cubiertos en purpurina y colores estrafalarios súper brillantes. Tal y como yo lo veo, tanto si eres del género masculino o femenino, gótico con un lado sensible, o simplemente te molan los peluches y quieres algo un poco distinto, los Skelanimals funcionan fantásticamente.

The other really cool thing about Skelanimals is that they just don’t go for your classic dog, cat, bear, kinda plush. Some of the most recent releases are frogs, penguins…! And the franchise has expanded a lot: I think they now produce some plushies with Dia de los Muertos/sugar skulls kinda designs, as well as different fabric textures and colours. But my favourite is by far the superhero collection! Who doesn’t want their cat to be Batman?!

La otra cosa que me gusta de los Skelanimal, es que los diseños no son tu típico gato, perro oso…Alguno de los diseños más recientes que he visto, İincluyen ranas y pingüinos! Y bueno la franquicia se ha expandido bastante; tienen una línea de Skelanimals con diseños del Día de los Muertos, y otros con distintos estampados, texturas y colores. Pero lo mejor es la línea Skelanimals de superhéroes: İ¿quien no quiere un gato Batman, o perro Superman?!

In addition, they have some other kind of merchandise: accessories and clothes. I remember that my sister used to have a pencil-case that she wrecked to pieces cause she used it so much it just gave up. And I have my t-shirt still in one piece.

También tienen otros productos como ropa y accesorios. Creo recordar que mi hermana tenía un estuche que destrozo de tanto usarlo. Y yo sigo teniendo mi camiseta que está intacta.

So I will leave you with a selection of my current plushies – please note the use of the word Selection…there are loads. (And part of the problem is they are now mingling with my sister’s and my mum’s! So it’s difficult to keep track! 🙂 )

Así que os dejo con una selección de los peluches que tengo por ahí – sí, selección, es que hay bastantes, y el problema además es que empezamos a tener problemas para saber si son míos, de mi hermana, İo incluso de mi madre!

This is Bunny. Bunny’s story is quite sad actually: when I moved to the UK for uni (2009) I brought some of my plushies with me, including my second Skelanimal ever K – the cat – which went along with my t-shirt. But it seems that at some point in my trip to my first year home, K was either lost or stolen…I put a call out for anyone who may have seen it, but I didn’t hear anything, so I can only hope and assume K found a new home and they are treating him well. I was pretty upset about losing K. So a little later, my parents made sure that K got a replacement – Bunny. I never wanted to feel like it was a replacement. I have other cat plushies. But Bunny is the only rabbit (real or stuffed) I recall ever having, hence the name, which for me is rather uncreative. But it is important he knows he is The Bunny.

Este es Bunny, y su historia es un poco triste. Cuando me vine al Reino Unido a la universidad (2009), evidentemente me traje algunas de mis cosas conmigo, entre ellas mi segundo Skelanimal: K, el gato que iba a juego con mi camiseta. Parece ser que de camino entre mi casa de primer año y la uni, K se cayó de mi mochila o simplemente me lo robaron L Puse un anuncio, pero no obtuve respuesta, así que espero que K este en su casa nueva donde le traten bien y le quieran mucho. Yo estaba bastante triste de perder a K, así que al poco tiempo de perderlo, mis padres me compraron a Bunny para compensar la pérdida. Pero yo no quería que fuese como un reemplazamiento de K a Bunny. Tengo otros peluches que son gatos, pero nunca he tenido un conejito de verdad o de mentiras (que yo recuerde). Por tanto, se quedó con Bunny, para que el supiese que era el único conejo, y así tener gran importancia a pesar de la falta de originalidad del nombre.

That is Jack! My first Skelanimal ever. I was so pleased to have a bat, I thought it was so cool and original. Jack is known though for attracting all the fluff because his wings are like velvet. So he has been in the washing a few times – probably the cleanest teddy ever.

İY este es Jack, mi primer Skelanimal! La verdad es que me gustó mucho que fuese un murciélago, que es muy original y mola mazo. El único problema es que Jack atrae un montón de pelusilla porque sus alas son como de terciopelo y lo atrapa todo, así que ha pasado por la lavadora unas cuantas veces. Debe de ser el peluche más limpio del mundo.

Cause Jack was so successful, I got a bigger version of himself, which also turns into a pillow; Max. And you can see him in the photo below with a bunch of the other members of the gang! Y como Jack fue una gran revelación, pues se incorporó a Max, su hermano mayor que también es un murci pero se transforma en cojín. Y aquí le podéis ver abajo con el resto de la tropa (o al menos parte).
